The accession to NATO of the part of Ukraine controlled by Kiev, Alexei Arestovich, ex-adviser to the country’s president’s office, called “a very good deal.”
The accession to NATO of the territory of Ukraine controlled by Kiev, with the non-proliferation of alliance guarantees to the part of the country that is still under Russian occupation, would be a “super-historical chance” for Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by a former adviser to the office of the President of Ukraine Oleksiy Arestovich on the air of journalist Yulia Latynina on YouTube. Ukrainian and Russian media drew attention to this statement on Sunday, July 16.
“Let’s do it. Some of the occupied territories remain occupied, out of the control of the Ukrainian government. Let’s just say, 80% (…) In fact, we, for the most part of the state, having stopped the war, join NATO . Many can say that this is a super-historic chance,” Arestovich said.
At the same time, he recalled the opinions of some analysts that no one is proposing to Ukraine to refuse to liberate Crimea and other occupied territories: “They simply propose to do it not by military means, due to the lack of prospects. Or to do it by military means, but at the cost of destroying 200,000 male population, the gene pool, the destroyed economy and everything else.”
According to Arestovich, the first scenario is reminiscent of “the FRG-GDR option”: ” The FRG joins NATO, the GDR is recognized as German territory, which we will definitely return, but NATO guarantees do not apply to it.” “In principle, this is a very good deal. To some extent it is immoral, but very good,” Yulia Latynina’s interlocutor said.
Lack of Ukraine’s invitation to NATO at the Vilnius summit
At the NATO summit in Vilnius, which ended on July 12 , Ukraine, contrary to Kiev’s expectations, did not receive an invitation to join the North Atlantic Alliance on a specific date. Instead, a modified procedure for Ukraine was announced with the abolition of the Membership Action Plan (MAP). In addition, NATO assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that his country would become a member of the alliance after winning the war with Russia .
