Some Western officials are offering Ukraine agreements on territorial concessions to end the war, but they do not meet the goals of both Kyiv and Moscow.

Details:  According to the publication, the United States and its key European allies, such as Germany, want to prevent a Russian victory, but are wary of the costs and risks associated with helping Ukraine to achieve its complete victory.

The material says that in private conversations, many Western officials do not believe that the United States and its allies can leave it up to Kyiv to determine the final goal of ending the war.

Among them there are fears, writes The Wall Street Journal, that Ukraine’s “maximalist goals” guarantee endless war, and therefore they would like to offer Ukraine an agreement to accept the actual loss of part of the territory in exchange for NATO or EU membership or the promise of a long-term military and economic assistance.

The publication explains this thinking as a desire in the West to contain the conflict, the shock waves of which are being felt in the global economy, as well as uncertainty about how long Western voters will maintain the current level of assistance to Kiev and disbelief that Ukraine will be able to completely expel Russian troops from its territory.

Recall: Earlier, NATO Secretary General  Jens Stoltenberg reacted to the words of his chief of staff,  Stian Jenssen, who had previously admitted that Ukraine could become a member of the Alliance in exchange for “renunciation” of part of its territory.

According to him, only Ukrainians can decide when conditions for negotiations exist, and who can decide at the negotiating table what solution is acceptable.

Recall that on August 15, NATO Secretary General’s Chief of Staff Stian Jenssen admitted that Ukraine  could become a member of the Alliance in exchange for “relinquishing” part of its territory .

Subsequently, he  called his words  about a possible scenario for Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance in exchange for territorial concessions to Russia, said the day before, a “mistake”.
