Gus Poyet is ready to add insult to injury – by replacing Stephen Kenny as Ireland manager.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder guided Greece to home and away wins over Ireland – results that have all but brought the curtain down on Stephen Kenny’s reign.
Poyet, whose contract with Greece expires at the end of this campaign, admitted that he “would love” to manage the Boys in Green.

While the timing would be complicated by the fact that Greece are guaranteed a play-off place next March if they don’t clinch a top-two spot, Poyet didn’t hide his desire to land the Irish job.
“I would love that. I would absolutely love that. I think it is a terrific place to come and play football,” he said.
“I was even surprised coming from the hotel, watching the people. I pay attention a lot. How many people have got the tracksuit? The black one. How many people have the green.
“Listen, in Uruguay we are patriots, but I don’t think many people buy the national team tracksuit. I don’t remember, maybe I am wrong.

Poyet revealed that he targeted the two games against Ireland as must-wins if they were to squeeze between France and the Netherlands, just as Kenny did after the draw for Group B was made.
However, he knew it wasn’t going to be easy and a couple of results early in his reign, which began in February 2022, shook his confidence.
“The shirt? Yes. But I don’t think many people buy the tracksuit. They are there with the tracksuit, it is proper. It is proper.”
