Amazon has announced plans to extend its drone delivery service to Britain, Italy, and an additional location in the United States, aiming to broaden its aerial delivery initiative.

Starting late 2024, customers in these areas will have the option to receive their packages via drones, integrated into Amazon’s existing fulfillment network and operated from same-day delivery sites, according to the company.

Amazon’s delivery drones are already at work in California and Texas, and a more robust MK30 model is set to handle even extreme weather conditions, according to Amazon Prime Air Vice President David Carbon.

Prime AI Director of Engineering, Jason Patrao, highlighted the customers’ desire for faster deliveries and expressed confidence that the drone program, though in its early stages, will become a familiar and widespread service.

Amazon initially revealed its drone delivery plans in 2013, sparking anticipation for a swift revolution in package delivery speed. Despite the ambitious vision outlined by founder Jeff Bezos, progress has been gradual. The Prime Air service was introduced in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas, last year, but as of May, according to CNBC, only 100 deliveries were reported, far below the internal target of 10,000 for the year.
